Five virtual walking tours for lockdown

Get out of your home without leaving your house, with these virtual walking tours exploring local history

It’s with great sadness we cancelled our summer walking tours with our partners, Hackney Tours and JoyRiders. We’re exploring socially distanced version of those tours, but in the meantime, here are some virtual walking tours to explore from the safety of your own home.

In Her Footsteps
While we don’t recommend using our walking tour app on location at the moment, it is designed to be used at home too. You can complete tours of Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Walthamstow via the website, including listening to audio clips of some of the women featured.

The East End Women’s Museum
The East End Women’s Museum have an interactive map on their website, which has a wide range of women’s stories. You can also submit your own stories to the map.

This brilliant idea from the East End Women’s Museum encourages people to spot women’s history along their daily walk (or run or bike ride). By using the hashtag #womenhistoryonmywalk you can share the heritage you see. There are some lovely contributions to an ever growing project.

Look Up London — Bethnal Green & Aldgate
It’s a hard time for self employed people, especially those in tourism. I love the creativity some have shown in keeping their business going. Katie from Look Up London is one of the best, integrating Google maps functionality to run tours from home. Although not specifically women’s history, she does two East London tours — Bethnal Green and Aldgate — which are packed with radical history.
